In Sounding, the doors are openings in the bottom of a filling vessel, and what fills it is everything this world has lost. In Standing Water, the doors live only while watched, and eleven weeks of news coverage become a hand holding them open. The Inventory makes the doors previews of a deletion that will smooth all record of itself—except one man's numbered pages. And in The Thinning, the doors are not new at all: they are twelve permanent points of contact between realities, coming briefly visible as a thirteenth world presses its way back into the arrangement.
Four incompatible answers, ordered shortest to longest and fastest to slowest, with no interior that connects them: these are separate drafts of the same disruption, filed together to make their contradictions the point. A water man, a witness, a recorder, and an astronomer, each the only civilian with a long enough record to matter—and none of them able to save what the doors have already taken.
