Every Creature a Word of God
The Life and Vision of Al-Damiri, the Scholar Who Listened to the Living WorldBy Narin Hikma
Length8h 18m
About this audiobook
What if the work nobody thanked you for is the part that lasts?
In Cairo in 1368, a scholar heard a student misidentify a creature while learned men let it pass. He walked home and started writing a book no one had asked for.
For thirty years, Kamal al-Din al-Damiri wrote down everything known about every living creature—over a thousand in total—giving the louse forty pages and the lion eleven. To him, every creature was a word written by God.
This narrative biography tells the story of a tailor's son whose monumental work was copied by hand across three continents for six hundred years.
• Meet the animals of medieval Cairo and the Quran
• Discover an Islamic law that gave animals rights no human could waive
• See what happens to careful work built in hours when nobody was looking
This is a book for anyone who has spent years on something quiet, wondering if it counted.
Open it anywhere. The creature you find will still be there.
