Dawnland in Flames: The Native Border Wars of the Northern Frontier

About this audiobook
Snow lay four feet deep in the Mohawk Valley in February 1690 when two hundred men on snowshoes came down the frozen river toward Schenectady, the last palisade between Albany and the Great Lakes. French officers and militia led the march. Beside them came Kahnawake Mohawks, Catholics from the mission villages near Montreal, cousins of the very Mohawks the English were counting on to protect the town under the old alliance they called the Covenant Chain.
The raid was one blow in a generation of war for the country between New France and New England, seen here from the Native side of the line: the Wabanaki holding the Kennebec front and fighting over Acadia, the Haudenosaunee gambling between two empires, the Peace of Ryswick in 1697 and the promises it broke, and the council at Montreal in 1701 where nearly forty nations made peace. Then Queen Anne's War brought the fighting north again, with the Maine frontier burning and a New England army besieging Port Royal in 1710.
In 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht handed Acadia to Britain and redrew the map of the Northeast. Not one of the Native nations who had fought the war had a seat at the table. They kept negotiating anyway, and the last chapter shows how.
