While this can be beneficial for individuals with anxiety or sleep disorders, it also makes benzodiazepines highly addictive. Users can develop tolerance quickly, requiring higher doses to achieve the same effects. This can lead to a cycle of increasing use and dependence, making it difficult to stop without professional help.
The misuse of benzodiazepines often begins with a legitimate prescription. Patients may start taking the medication as directed but gradually increase their dosage to maintain its effectiveness. Others may obtain benzodiazepines illegally, seeking their calming and euphoric effects. The accessibility of these drugs, combined with their potent effects, makes them a prime target for abuse. This has led to a rise in benzodiazepine addiction, particularly among individuals with a history of substance abuse.
