Benjamin Norton Bugbey came to California in 1849 to mine for gold. From gold mining he built the famed Natoma Vineyard making wine, sparkling wine, brandy, table grapes, and raisins. Bugbey's life collapsed in 1878, and he lost everything including his land and marriage. He would get sober, reinvent himself, and went on to defend Chinese men and women who were vilified in the 1880s. He wrote a radical manifesto calling for limits on land ownership and wealth. Despite being on the outside of contemporary politics, he was elected Sacramento Tax Collector in 1898. Bugbey's story is one of perseverance, grit, and determination. After losing everything, the U. S. Supreme Court sided with him in a fight with a large water company. He went on to patent a cooling railroad car and triumph over Hiram Johnson in splitting the tax collector office from the sheriff's office in Sacramento County.
