About this audiobook
Time Travel Adventures of James Allison gathers Robert E. Howard's haunting cycle of tales in which a physically confined modern narrator ranges backward through ancestral memory into prehistoric and barbaric ages. Rather than mechanical time travel, Howard uses reincarnation and racial memory as imaginative devices, framing stories such as "The Valley of the Worm" and "The Garden of Fear" as recovered lives of heroic struggle. The prose is vigorous, somber, and incantatory, standing at the crossroads of pulp adventure, weird fiction, and heroic fantasy. Robert E. Howard, the Texas-born creator of Conan the Cimmerian, was deeply drawn to vanished civilizations, frontier violence, and the tragic grandeur of doomed warriors. His own sense of isolation, his fascination with history and anthropology, and his poetic vision of life as an endless conflict between civilization and primal vitality all inform the James Allison narratives. Allison's lameness and visionary inwardness give these stories an unusually personal resonance within Howard's work. This volume is recommended for readers interested in the philosophical side of pulp fantasy: not merely battles and monsters, but meditations on memory, identity, courage, and decline. It is essential for admirers of Howard and rewarding for anyone tracing the origins of modern sword-and-sorcery.
