About this audiobook

In Black Amazon of Mars, Leigh Brackett sends the mercenary adventurer Eric John Stark across a dying, barbaric Mars of lost cities, ancient cults, and lethal frontiers. First published in the pulp milieu of Planet Stories, the tale belongs to the sword-and-planet tradition of Edgar Rice Burroughs, yet its prose is darker, leaner, and more elegiac. Brackett's Mars is not merely exotic scenery; it is a haunted civilization in decline, rendered in vivid, hardboiled rhythms and mythic imagery. Leigh Brackett, often called the "Queen of Space Opera," brought to science fiction an unusual fusion of planetary romance, noir toughness, and classical adventure. Her work as a screenwriter—including contributions to The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo, and an early draft of The Empire Strikes Back—reflects her instinct for sharp dialogue, moral ambiguity, and cinematic movement. Stark's outsider identity and Brackett's formidable women suggest an author alert to power, exile, and survival. This novella is highly recommended for readers interested in the mature possibilities of pulp fiction: swift in action, but rich in atmosphere and cultural melancholy. It will especially reward admirers of vintage science fiction, heroic fantasy, and stories where adventure is shadowed by loss, history, and desire.
