This War is the Passion
A Catholic Meditation on Wartime Suffering, the Mystical Body, and Redemptive LoveBy Caryll Houselander

About this audiobook
In *This War Is the Passion*, Caryll Houselander interprets the Second World War through the Christian mystery of Christ's Passion. Rather than offering a military history or a conventional theological treatise, she presents a sequence of meditative reflections in which bombing, fear, bereavement, displacement, and moral suffering become occasions for recognizing Christ's continuing presence in the wounded human body. Her prose is lyrical, symbolic, and deliberately accessible, combining biblical allusion, mystical insight, and the immediate imagery of wartime life. The book belongs to the tradition of Catholic devotional literature, yet its daring identification of contemporary suffering with the Passion gives it a distinctive modern urgency. Houselander (1901–1954) was an English Catholic writer, poet, illustrator, and spiritual visionary whose childhood difficulties, artistic sensibility, and profound empathy for the marginalized shaped her theology of incarnation. Living through the upheavals of the Blitz, she understood war not as an abstract political event but as a spiritual and communal crisis. Her characteristic vision—that Christ is mysteriously present in every person—enabled her to write with both tenderness and prophetic intensity. This book will reward readers interested in Christian mysticism, wartime literature, Catholic spirituality, and the ethics of responding to collective suffering. It is especially valuable for those seeking a compassionate, imaginative account of how faith may remain intellectually serious and spiritually active amid catastrophe.
