About this audiobook
The Orange Fairy Book (1906) gathers tales from a strikingly wide range of traditions, including sources from India, Scandinavia, Africa, and Eastern Europe, presenting them in the polished, lucid prose characteristic of Andrew Lang's celebrated "coloured" fairy books. Its narratives—of enchanted animals, perilous quests, cunning heroines, and supernatural justice—belong to the late Victorian and Edwardian project of comparative folklore, where oral wonder-tales were reshaped for the nursery while retaining echoes of older mythic patterns and communal storytelling. Andrew Lang was a Scottish classicist, poet, critic, anthropologist, and folklorist whose intellectual range uniquely equipped him for such a collection. Though many translations and retellings were prepared by collaborators, especially his wife, Leonora Blanche Alleyne Lang, his editorial vision unified the series. His interests in myth, ritual, and cultural transmission helped make fairy tales objects of both literary pleasure and scholarly curiosity. This volume is warmly recommended to readers who value fairy tales beyond mere childhood amusement. It offers imaginative delight, historical breadth, and insight into how early modern folklore studies shaped the canon of international wonder literature.
