About this audiobook
The river is low enough to walk across on dry stone, the county is hauling water in tankers, and the man I have not spoken to in three years is standing in my patient's yard with a hoof knife in his belt.
I am thirty-three and I run the second ambulance in Kelvin Ferry, Tennessee, with a partner who never asks anything I cannot answer. What I have is a rented house on Water Street, a well down to mud, eleven years on the truck, and a folded sheet of yellow dyno paper that has lived under the clip of my clipboard since the fourteenth of March, three years ago.
I found it behind the seat of his truck, in the lid of his grandfather's toolbox, while I was looking for an insurance card. A dyno run at one forty-seven in the morning, a peak no engine in that class can make, and a woman's handwriting across the top of it that said nobody has to know. I had already seen the two of them through the open bay door of the shop with her bare foot in his hands, and I have never once asked him what I was looking at, because not asking was cheaper than the answer.
Three years of not asking cost me the Mercer porch, the club's women, the house I had on that land, and my own name in this county's mouth. It cost him the rest of his: by the second week the town had settled on what he was, and he never corrected it, and I let him not correct it. That is the part I have stopped being able to live with.
Now the drought is two months deep, the club's whole year hangs on a certification sheet, and the sheet is in my pocket. What he wants can be put on paper: a hearing, an honest number on a legal document, a signature a county will accept. Getting it means handing the series board the one page that ends the club that raised him after the ridge road took his brother, selling the bike he built over two winters, and telling my partner the truth about an envelope he carried to that man's door.
Some debts get paid in money and some get paid in years, and only one of those leaves a receipt you can hold up to a window. This is a book about the interest that runs on a story nobody corrects, and about two people who loved each other well enough to spend three years proving who was right.
