About this audiobook

They were about forty miles from Canada when the soldiers found them. It was the last day of September 1877. The camp below the Bear's Paw Mountains in Montana had stopped to rest its horses along a creek, and the Nimiipuu families in it, the Nez Perce, had been on the run since June, over the Bitterroots, through the new Yellowstone National Park and out onto the buffalo plains, with the U.S. Army behind them the whole way. The war began over a valley. The Wallowa, in the far northeast corner of Oregon, had been guaranteed to the Nimiipuu by the treaty of 1855. Then gold was found on the Clearwater, and a new treaty in 1863 cut the reservation to a fraction of its size. The bands whose country lay outside the new lines, among them the Wallowa band led by the younger Joseph, never signed it. In May 1877 General Oliver Howard gave them thirty days to come in. What followed was a running war of nearly four months: White Bird Canyon, the Clearwater, the dawn attack at the Big Hole, the crossing of the park, and the siege in the snow at the Bear's Paw, where Ollokot, Looking Glass and Toohoolhoolzote were killed and Joseph surrendered on October 5. Exile in Indian Territory followed, and many died there before the survivors were sent back to the Northwest in 1885. Joseph lived another twenty-seven years. He was never allowed to go home to the Wallowa.
