The Merchant of Venice (The Unabridged Play) + The Classic Biography (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. The Life of William ShakespeareBy William Shakespeare
Length17h 7m
About this audiobook
The Merchant of Venice remains one of Shakespeare's most intricate comedies, blending romantic intrigue, legal drama, and moral unease within the cosmopolitan world of Renaissance Venice and Belmont. In its unabridged form, the play preserves the full complexity of Shakespeare's verse and prose: the lyrical idealism of Portia's courtship scenes, the sharp mercantile language of bonds and credit, and the troubling brilliance of Shylock's rhetoric. Read alongside the included classic biography, the work gains fuller literary context as a product of Elizabethan theatre, Christian humanism, and early modern anxieties about law, money, mercy, and religious difference. William Shakespeare, actor, shareholder, and dramatist of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, wrote from within a theatrical culture deeply alert to public taste and political tension. His experience with London's commercial life, legal institutions, and popular prejudices helped shape a play that is at once entertaining and ethically provocative. The biographical material illuminates the conditions under which such dramatic contradictions could flourish. This edition is recommended for readers seeking not merely a famous play, but a challenging encounter with Shakespeare's dramatic intelligence. Students, scholars, and general readers will find in it both theatrical pleasure and enduring moral inquiry.
