About this audiobook
The Kingdom of God Is Within You is Tolstoy's most sustained theological and political treatise, a work of prophetic moral argument rather than conventional narrative. Interpreting Christ's Sermon on the Mount with radical literalness, Tolstoy rejects violence, oaths, militarism, and institutional coercion as incompatible with true Christianity. Its style is urgent, polemical, and scripturally grounded, standing at the crossroads of Russian religious thought, nineteenth-century social criticism, and the emerging philosophy of nonviolent resistance. Leo graf Tolstoy, already world-renowned for War and Peace and Anna Karenina, wrote this book after the profound spiritual crisis that reshaped his later life. Disillusioned with aristocratic privilege, state power, and the Orthodox Church's alliance with empire, he turned toward a demanding ethical Christianity rooted in conscience and simplicity. His own struggles with faith, property, and moral responsibility give the book its uncompromising intensity. This volume is essential for readers interested in literature, religion, pacifism, and political ethics. It influenced figures such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., and it remains a challenging invitation to examine whether inward conviction can transform public life.
