About this audiobook
The Kebra Nagast, or "The Glory of Kings," is a seminal work of Ethiopian literature that intertwines biblical narrative with ancient history. This text, composed in the 14th century, provides a rich account of the Solomonic lineage of Ethiopian emperors, particularly focusing on the legendary Queen Makeda of Sheba and her pivotal role in their heritage. Its literary style oscillates between poetry and prose, filled with vivid symbolism and an elevated narrative voice, demonstrating the fusion of Christian and pre-Christian elements that reflect Ethiopia's unique cultural tapestry. The anonymous author of The Kebra Nagast likely hailed from a period in Ethiopia where the Solomonic dynasty was legitimizing its rule through connections to biblical figures and narratives. The author's work manifests an intent to elevate Ethiopian identity, weaving together myth, history, and spirituality, drawing upon longstanding oral traditions and the rich ecclesiastical background of the time. This remarkable text offers invaluable insights into the religious and cultural identity of Ethiopia, making it a pivotal read for those interested in Ethiopia's historical narratives, biblical literature, or post-colonial studies. The Kebra Nagast not only provides a profound and engaging story but serves as a testament to the enduring power of identity through narrative.
