The Homilies of the Anglo-Saxon Church
Vernacular Gospel Sermons, Saints' Feasts, and Christian Teaching in Late Anglo-Saxon EnglandBy Ælfric

About this audiobook
The Homilies of the Anglo-Saxon Church presents Ælfric's carefully ordered cycle of vernacular sermons, chiefly associated with the Catholic Homilies, which interpret the liturgical year through Scripture, patristic teaching, saints' lives, and practical Christian instruction. Written in lucid, rhythmically balanced Old English prose, the collection translates learned Latin theology into an accessible yet intellectually disciplined form. Ælfric's characteristic restraint—his preference for doctrinal clarity over sensational miracle narratives—places the work within the Benedictine Reform and makes it a central monument of late Anglo-Saxon religious and literary culture. The homilies illuminate both the beliefs of the period and the sophisticated possibilities of English prose. Ælfric, a monk and teacher associated with the reforming monasteries of Winchester and Cerne, composed these sermons around the turn of the eleventh century. His education in Latin theology, his commitment to monastic renewal, and his concern that priests and laypeople understand orthodox Christian doctrine all shaped the collection. Writing amid a culture in which preaching was essential to religious formation, he adapted authoritative sources for an English-speaking audience without sacrificing theological precision. His work consequently reveals an author who was simultaneously translator, educator, theologian, and literary craftsman. This volume is indispensable for readers interested in Old English literature, medieval preaching, Anglo-Saxon history, or the development of English prose. It rewards close study as a theological document and as a deliberate act of cultural translation, showing how an intellectually ambitious writer made universal Christian teaching persuasive within a specific English community. Scholars will value its engagement with patristic tradition and manuscript culture, while general readers can appreciate its clarity, narrative skill, and vivid account of early medieval religious life.
