About this audiobook
The Greatest Short Stories of W. Somerset Maugham gathers exemplary works by a master of the modern short form, revealing his cool irony, lucid prose, and fascination with moral ambiguity. Set across drawing rooms, colonies, hospitals, and remote outposts, these stories combine elegant realism with dramatic compression, often turning on betrayal, self-deception, desire, and social hypocrisy. In the context of early twentieth-century fiction, Maugham stands between Victorian narrative clarity and modern psychological skepticism. William Somerset Maugham (1874–1965) drew on an unusually wide experience of life: medical training in London, literary celebrity, wartime intelligence work, and extensive travel through Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. His acute observation of manners and motives was sharpened by his position as both insider and outsider—cosmopolitan, discreet, and unsentimental. These circumstances helped produce fiction attentive to the masks people wear and the compromises by which they live. This collection is recommended to readers who value narrative precision, worldly intelligence, and quietly devastating endings. It offers an ideal introduction to Maugham's art and a rewarding return for those already acquainted with his novels and plays.
