About this audiobook
Rain and Other South Sea Stories, drawn from Maugham's 1921 collection The Trembling of a Leaf, gathers tales set among the islands of the South Pacific, where European settlers, missionaries, traders, and wanderers confront desire, boredom, illness, and moral collapse. In the celebrated "Rain," the encounter between Sadie Thompson and the zealous Reverend Davidson becomes a devastating study of repression and hypocrisy. Maugham's style is lucid, restrained, and ironical, combining realist observation with the late-imperial fiction of exile and disillusion. William Somerset Maugham was a physician by training, a cosmopolitan traveler, and one of the most accomplished storytellers of the early twentieth century. His journeys through the Pacific after the First World War supplied him with settings and characters, but his deeper subject was always human self-deception. His medical eye, theatrical sense of scene, and skepticism toward respectable morality all inform these stories' cool precision. This collection is highly recommended to readers interested in colonial literature, psychological fiction, and the short story as a disciplined art form. Maugham neither romanticizes the tropics nor reduces them to scenery; he uses them as a charged moral landscape. The result is fiction that remains elegant, unsettling, and remarkably modern.
