About this audiobook
The Film of Fear is a brisk detective novel rooted in the anxieties and fascinations of the early motion-picture age. Kummer turns the film studio into a modern Gothic chamber, where illusion, mechanical reproduction, celebrity, and crime converge. Its prose is direct and theatrical, favoring swift scenes, dramatic entrances, and clues staged almost like shots in a silent picture. In literary context, the novel belongs to the interwar popular mystery tradition, yet it is especially notable for making cinema itself both setting and metaphor. Frederic Arnold Kummer was an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter whose career moved comfortably between print culture and the performing arts. His familiarity with melodrama, stage construction, and the emerging film world informs the book's pacing and atmosphere. Kummer's professional proximity to theatrical and cinematic storytelling helps explain his interest in deception, spectacle, and the unstable boundary between performance and truth. Readers drawn to classic detective fiction, early Hollywood settings, and mysteries that treat modern technology as a source of wonder and dread will find The Film of Fear especially rewarding. It is recommended not merely as an entertaining puzzle, but as a vivid artifact of a moment when cinema was reshaping popular imagination.
