About this audiobook

Garrett Cross scrapes tape across his stick shaft and bites it off clean, and he does not look toward the glass. He knows what is up there. A woman in a team jacket, clipboard balanced on one knee, eyes scanning the ice like she is reading a balance sheet. The email went out from the GM at six that morning. Mandatory player cooperation. Confidentiality assured. Every season they bring in someone new to poke at the team's heads. Every season Garrett smiles, nods and tells them exactly what they want to hear. Dr. Natalie Lake does not stay behind the glass. She walks onto the ice in rubber-soled heels, does not slip once, and tells him she will see him at eleven. Coach has already agreed to the arrangement. What she has been asked to watch, by a league office that sent her his file, are his hands. The knuckles he never lets heal. The scabs he reopens on a heavy bag after team dinners. There is a reason, and it sits in a newspaper clipping eleven years old: a junior game, a hit into the boards that the on-ice officials called legal, and a defenseman named Marcus Webb with a fractured cervical vertebra. Garrett was seventeen. The record got sealed. The file never closed. He is also, though it takes him a long time to say it, paying his sister Jenna's tuition on a two-way contract, and Jenna keeps being found at every new address by a man called Big Jim. They are colleagues. There is a morality clause in her contract. And there is Cooper Nash, head shaved, forearms black with ink, who is patient, who is pleasant to the rookies, and who is working an angle nobody has guessed. A charity auction where Garrett raises his paddle without deciding to. An airport shut by a blizzard and eight hours in the back of a cab. A burner phone in a dark dressing room with one contact saved in it. A GM who says two weeks without pay, and a psychologist who stands in that office and says the thing that saves Garrett's job at the cost of her own standing. *Everyone has a past. What matters is what you do with the future.* What Garrett has to prove in the end is not that he can win a fight. It is that with a half-open net in front of him and Cooper hooking his stick, he can make the pass instead. A hockey romance about rage, guardianship and the long work of not swinging - closed-door, with a real workplace problem rather than a decorative one, a rookie worth protecting, and a pressed linden leaf that means exactly what it sounds like.
