Filled in the gaps with jobs I never had, dates that don't add up.* He dropped out of college and worked three jobs to take care of his brother, and he took this one for the salary and, much more, the insurance. Mateo is nineteen. Mateo has leukemia. The trial that might buy him time costs one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
Callum Hartwell runs the magazine. He is still flinching from a plagiarism scandal he took the fall for publicly, so he checks everything twice and hires from outside because he does not trust the internal culture. He is careful, and observant, and fair, which are three terrible qualities in a man you are lying to every morning.
Then it stops being deniable between them, and Leo learns what Callum's own quiet is actually protecting, and that somebody else knows it too.
