About this audiobook

Before trade kettles reached the northern interior, people boiled water by dropping fire-heated stones into vessels of birchbark or hide until it roiled. Ojibwe traders to the east named one western people for that habit, the ones who cook with stones, and in the late seventeenth century French traders wrote the name down as Assiniboine. The people already had a name of their own. They were Nakoda, the allies. Their traditions remember a parting from the people who became the Dakota, and a slow walk northwest into the lake country and, in time, out onto the plains. From there the book carries them to the posts on the Bay and down the Mandan road to the Missouri, into the horse era and the rivalry of the Hudson's Bay and North West companies, and on through the smallpox years, the missionaries, the border drawn through their country, and the treaties of 1851 and 1855. Nakoda riders in the Cypress Hills, the division into reserves in Canada and reservations in the United States, and a long, hard century bring the story to the Nakoda communities of today, from Fort Belknap and Fort Peck in Montana to Carry the Kettle in Saskatchewan. Everyone in the northern interior once cooked with stones, but it was the Nakoda who were named for it, and the name has followed them through three centuries of companies, borders and treaties.
