The only clue is a strip of gray-brown wool that turns red as a coal for exactly one breath. So she buys her own flight, blocks two weeks of leave, and hires a guide named Kusi to take her up into the Andes. The trail argues with itself the whole way. A stream runs uphill. Her compass gives three different answers.
At the top is a valley where knotted cords refuse to hold a lie, a ceremony called the Retying that falls in sixteen days, and a fog that shuts the pass behind it. Her flight home leaves in nine.
A slow, warm, lightly funny travel fantasy for anyone who has ever stayed late to make the numbers match.
