About this audiobook
Sacred Books of the East is a monumental anthology of translated religious and philosophical texts from Asia, bringing together foundational works of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Islam. Edited chiefly under the direction of F. Max Müller in the late nineteenth century, the series exemplifies Victorian comparative philology: learned, textual, and often reverent, though shaped by the assumptions of its age. Its style is formal and documentary, privileging fidelity to scripture, ritual law, myth, and metaphysical speculation over literary ornament. The designation "Various" is especially apt, for the work is not the product of one author but of many ancient traditions, sages, jurists, poets, and commentators, mediated by European Orientalist scholars. Müller's intellectual ambition was to make the sacred literatures of the East available to Western readers and to place them in conversation with biblical and classical studies, reflecting a period when comparative religion was becoming a serious academic discipline. This collection is recommended for readers seeking a broad, historically significant entry into world scripture and comparative thought. While modern translations may supersede individual volumes, the series remains invaluable for its scope, scholarly ambition, and enduring role in shaping global religious studies.
