About this audiobook
Eleanor H. Porter's Pollyanna and Pollyanna Grows Up trace the moral and emotional education of one of American children's literature's most enduring heroines. The first novel introduces Pollyanna Whittier, whose "Glad Game" transforms a stern New England household and, gradually, an entire community; the sequel follows her into adolescence and young womanhood, complicating optimism with poverty, illness, love, and social change. Written in clear, sentimental prose shaped by early twentieth-century domestic fiction, the books combine didactic purpose with narrative warmth, situating themselves between Victorian moral tales and modern juvenile realism. Porter, born in New Hampshire in 1868, brought to her fiction a keen understanding of small-town life, Protestant moral culture, and the emotional economies of family and community. Trained first as a singer before turning to writing, she possessed a strong sense of voice and dramatic contrast. Her own New England background informs the novels' settings, while her humane interest in resilience helps explain Pollyanna's distinctive philosophy. These volumes are recommended for readers interested in classic children's literature, American sentimental tradition, and the cultural history of optimism. Far from mere cheerfulness, they offer a thoughtful study of hope as discipline, social influence, and ethical practice.
