About this audiobook
Plague Ship, the second Solar Queen adventure, follows the young apprentice Dane Thorson and the Free Trader crew as a profitable voyage turns into quarantine, suspicion, and a fight for commercial survival. Norton blends brisk space-opera plotting with a merchant-marine sensibility: contracts, cargoes, alien customs, and interstellar law matter as much as danger. Written in the tradition of mid-century juvenile science fiction, the novel is plain-spoken, suspenseful, and carefully structured around problem-solving rather than spectacle. Andre Norton, born Alice Mary Norton, was one of the formative voices of American science fiction and fantasy, renowned for making speculative adventure accessible to younger readers without condescension. Her work as a librarian and editor sharpened her instinct for narrative clarity, while her use of a male pen name reflects the gendered publishing assumptions of her era. In Plague Ship, her recurring interests—outsiders, trade, loyalty, and contact across cultures—are especially visible. This book is recommended for readers who enjoy classic science fiction with ethical stakes, compact pacing, and world-building grounded in practical detail. It is particularly rewarding for those interested in the origins of space-trader fiction and in Norton's humane, durable vision of adventure.
