About this audiobook
*Pistis Sophia* is a major Coptic Gnostic scripture, presenting an extended series of post-resurrection dialogues between Jesus and his disciples. Its central narrative recounts the fall, repentance, and restoration of Pistis Sophia, a divine emanation whose ordeal becomes a vehicle for exploring cosmic hierarchy, archons, redemption, and the ascent of the soul. The work combines mythic narrative with revealed discourse, penitential hymns, ritual instruction, and intricate cosmological catalogues. Its repetitive, visionary style reflects the liturgical and exegetical habits of late antique religious communities, while its emphasis on secret knowledge places it within the diverse intellectual world of second- and third-century Gnosticism. Preserved in a Coptic manuscript, it is invaluable for the study of early Christian plurality and esoteric theology. The author is anonymous, as is typical of much early Christian revelatory literature. The text's pseudonymous presentation as teaching delivered by the risen Christ situates it within traditions that claimed apostolic or heavenly authority rather than individual literary authorship. Its synthesis of Christian language, Jewish scriptural motifs, Middle Platonic cosmology, and Egyptian religious currents suggests composition and transmission within a culturally complex environment. The prominence of Mary Magdalene and other disciples also illuminates contemporary debates about revelation, spiritual authority, and access to divine knowledge. Readers interested in Gnosticism, early Christianity, comparative mythology, or the history of religious ideas will find *Pistis Sophia* both challenging and rewarding. Though dense in terminology and cosmological detail, its dramatic account of exile, repentance, and return gives the text enduring psychological and theological force. It is especially recommended alongside scholarly notes or a historical introduction.
