About this audiobook
Myth, Ritual and Religion (Vol. 1&2) is Andrew Lang's ambitious comparative study of the origins and meanings of myth across ancient and "primitive" cultures. Written in a lucid, argumentative Victorian prose, it ranges from Greek and Vedic traditions to Indigenous and folkloric materials, challenging purely solar or philological explanations of myth. Lang treats ritual, belief, and narrative as interwoven expressions of early human thought, placing the work within the formative debates of anthropology, classics, and comparative religion. Andrew Lang (1844–1912), Scottish classicist, folklorist, poet, and man of letters, brought to the subject an unusually wide command of literature, ethnography, and ancient languages. His skepticism toward dominant mythological theories, especially those of Max Müller and the philological school, helped shape this book's critical edge. Lang's interest in folklore, oral tradition, and survivals of archaic belief led him to seek patterns in mythology without reducing them to a single interpretive formula. This work is recommended for readers interested in the history of anthropology, religious studies, mythology, and Victorian intellectual culture. Though some terminology reflects its period, Lang's breadth, wit, and methodological independence remain compelling. It is especially valuable for those wishing to understand how modern comparative mythology emerged from nineteenth-century scholarly controversy.
