About this audiobook

What happens when an engineer, industrial administrator, and technocrat is suddenly thrust into the centre of one of the most turbulent periods in modern Chinese history? The life of Jiang Zemin is a remarkable journey through war, revolution, industrialization, economic reform, political crisis, and China's emergence as a major global power. Born in Yangzhou in 1926, Jiang grew up during a period of profound uncertainty. He witnessed the Japanese occupation, studied electrical engineering, became involved in student political activity, and joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1946. Yet his early career was not spent in government offices. Instead, he became an engineer and built decades of experience in factories, research institutions, industrial administration, foreign economic cooperation, and technology. His journey eventually carried him from Shanghai's factories to the highest levels of China's political system. Jiang participated in the construction of major industrial projects, worked alongside Soviet specialists, travelled abroad to study industrial technology, and became deeply involved in China's efforts to acquire foreign technology and expand international economic cooperation. His career in electronics and industrial administration prepared him for a very different challenge when he became mayor and later Party secretary of Shanghai. Then came 1989. Amid a profound political crisis in China, Jiang was unexpectedly elevated from Shanghai's leadership to become General Secretary of the Communist Party. He subsequently became chairman of the Central Military Commission and, in 1993, President of China. He had reached the centre of the country's Party, state, and military leadership at a moment when China was confronting both internal challenges and a rapidly changing international order. The years that followed would leave an extraordinary mark on China's history. Under Jiang's leadership, China continued its reform and opening process and moved toward what was officially described as a “socialist market economy.” The country deepened its participation in international trade, pursued economic and technological modernization, and eventually joined the World Trade Organization in 2001. At the same time, Jiang's era witnessed the return of Hong Kong and Macau to Chinese sovereignty, military modernization, expanding diplomatic relations, and the development of the “Three Represents” as part of the Communist Party's ideological framework. But Jiang's story is far more complicated than a list of achievements. His leadership unfolded amid political controversies, competing interpretations of China's future, the legacy of the 1989 crisis, tensions between reform and political control, and the enormous challenges created by China's rapid transformation. His relationship with the changing international order, particularly the United States and Russia, also became increasingly important as China expanded its global role. Jiang Zemin takes readers from a boy growing up in wartime Yangzhou to an engineer, industrial leader, Shanghai mayor, and ultimately one of the most important leaders of modern China. It follows the political crises, economic reforms, diplomatic developments, and historic transitions that defined his era, before tracing his retirement and final years. This is the story of a man whose life became intertwined with the transformation of a nation. Open these pages and journey through the remarkable life of Jiang Zemin—and discover the engineer who rose through China's industrial system to lead the country into a new century.
