About this audiobook

How does an engineer from a relatively modest family rise through the political system of China to become one of the most powerful figures in the world? The extraordinary life of Hu Jintao offers a fascinating window into the transformation of modern China. Born in 1942 in Jiangsu Province during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Hu grew up in a country experiencing extraordinary political upheaval. He lost his mother at just seven years old, pursued an education in engineering, and entered Tsinghua University at sixteen. At first, there was little reason to imagine that this technically trained young man would one day stand at the centre of China's political system. Yet Hu's journey would take him far beyond engineering. His career carried him from the laboratories and classrooms of Tsinghua into the massive water-conservancy projects of Gansu, where technical responsibilities gradually gave way to administration and Party work. He rose through the Communist Youth League, became a provincial leader in Guizhou, and then faced one of the most consequential assignments of his early career in Tibet. There, amid demonstrations, unrest, and the declaration of martial law in Lhasa in 1989, Hu became responsible for political leadership during a deeply sensitive crisis. His rise did not stop there. In 1992, at only forty-nine, Hu entered the Politburo Standing Committee as its youngest member. Over the following decade, he accumulated positions at the centre of China's political system, serving as President of the Central Party School, Vice President of China, and Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission. Between 2002 and 2004, authority passed gradually from Jiang Zemin to Hu across the Party, state, and military institutions. Then came the decade that would define his place in history. As China's top leader, Hu presided over a country undergoing enormous economic growth, urbanization, technological development, and increasing international influence. At the same time, his administration confronted SARS, inequality, corruption, environmental pressures, ethnic unrest, social tensions, and the challenges created by China's rapid transformation. His government promoted concepts such as the Scientific Outlook on Development and a Harmonious Society, seeking to address some of the social consequences accompanying economic expansion. China was also becoming increasingly important on the world stage. During Hu's leadership, its economic and diplomatic influence expanded, its relationship with the United States became increasingly consequential, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics offered a highly visible symbol of China's growing international presence. Hu Jintao follows this remarkable journey from childhood and engineering to provincial leadership, the highest offices of China, and his eventual withdrawal from the political stage. It is not merely the story of a president. It is the story of a man whose life unfolded alongside some of the most consequential decades in modern Chinese history. Open these pages and discover the engineer who became a national leader, the political career that carried him from Gansu to Beijing, and the decade in which he stood at the helm of a rapidly changing China.
