About this audiobook
Famous Composers and Their Works (Vol. 1&2) is an expansive compendium of musical biography, criticism, and cultural history, presenting the lives and achievements of major Western composers within the broader evolution of art music. Written in an elevated yet accessible nineteenth-century scholarly style, the volumes combine anecdote, historical narrative, and aesthetic judgment, situating figures such as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, and others within the traditions, institutions, and artistic movements that shaped their work. As a collaborative work by various contributors, the book reflects the encyclopedic ambitions of its age: to educate a cultivated readership and to preserve musical knowledge at a moment when concert culture, domestic music-making, and historical musicology were gaining new authority. Its authors draw upon biography, performance history, and contemporary critical taste, revealing how composers were understood not merely as craftsmen but as representatives of national character, spiritual aspiration, and artistic progress. This collection is recommended for readers interested in classical music, cultural history, and the formation of the musical canon. Though some judgments reflect their period, the volumes remain valuable for their breadth, seriousness, and insight into how great composers were interpreted by earlier generations.
