About this audiobook

In 1830 the Comanche controlled a domain larger than France - a horse-powered empire stretching from the Arkansas River to the Rio Grande, built on mustangs, bison, and trade. For forty-five years they held it against Mexico, the Republic of Texas, and the United States Army. This is the story of that empire and its unraveling, told through the men and women who lived it: Quanah Parker, son of a Comanche chief and a captured white girl; the war chiefs Buffalo Hump and Iron Jacket; Texas Rangers armed with five-shot revolvers; and the Comanche diplomats who negotiated at Council House and Medicine Lodge. Drawing on treaty records, agency ledgers, and Comanche oral history, Comanche Rising traces how a people with no written language outmaneuvered three nations - until the buffalo were gone, the reservations came, and the last free bands walked in from Palo Duro Canyon. It is a story of astonishing power and its cost, told with precision, sorrow, and respect for the people at its center.
