About this audiobook
Christmastide – Its History, Festivities, and Carols is an antiquarian study of Christmas as ceremony, social custom, and song. Sandys traces the season from pre-Christian winter rites and medieval ecclesiastical observance to English domestic revelry, feasting, mumming, wassailing, and the carol tradition. Written in a learned yet genial Victorian prose, the book belongs to the nineteenth-century recovery of national folklore and popular devotion, combining historical citation, anecdote, and lyric preservation. William Sandys, a London solicitor and accomplished antiquary, was deeply engaged in the study of early English literature and music. His earlier work collecting Christmas carols helped restore many traditional songs to public attention, and his legal training perhaps sharpened his documentary habits: he weighs sources, quotes old authorities, and treats festive customs as cultural evidence. The book reflects an age eager to reconcile modernity with inherited communal ritual. This volume is recommended to readers interested in Christmas beyond sentiment: as a layered historical institution shaped by religion, folklore, music, and household practice. Scholars of Victorian culture, hymnody, popular antiquities, and English seasonal tradition will find it especially rewarding, while general readers will enjoy its humane curiosity and richly textured account of the festival's enduring imaginative power.
