John H. Coleman Jr. was born in 1938 in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. After graduating from Armstrong High School, he served in the U.S. Navy and worked at the Newport News Shipyard. He then joined the Hampton Police Division, where he served in patrol, youth investigations, and community relations before retiring as a sergeant. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and business and a master’s in management. A father of four and grandfather of nine, he has served on many Hampton community boards. A View from Church Hill is his first book.
