Anwar Khanyo Shaik has Khoi-khoi, European and Indian ancestry. He has a doctorate in Education from the University of Liverpool. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa, at the southern tip of Africa. Cape Town and the coastal area as far up as Saldanha Bay is the area where Portuguese and other European settlers first made contact with the indigenous Khoi-khoi, and also settled by the late 1600s. Anwar has been keenly interested in his Khoi-khoi heritage, and has traveled extensively to visit old locations where the Khoi-khoi once thrived. He spent time in prison under Apartheid.
