George Bancroft (1800-1891) met with some of the greats of his time during a European tour. Among these were Humboldt, Goethe, Niebuhr, and Hegel. He wrote a biography of President Van Buren, and served as US Minister to England, Prussia, and Germany. In 1866, Congress chose him to deliver the special eulogy on Lincoln.
