She does not panic. She pulls up the message metadata instead: encrypted, custom algorithm, a non-standard hash length in the header. Whoever built this knew what they were doing, and knew she would look.
The second message arrives seventeen seconds later. *Do not involve police or we will know. Use your own protocols.*
So Livia deletes the contact for Lukas Gubler, the homicide detective who once told her that if anything ever happened she should call him first, no matter what she was told. Then she deletes the entire call log.
Then she opens the encryption key, and the hash resolves into an architecture she recognises, because she documented it herself. Inside the documentation is a Swiss-German curse, the one her father used when he burned dinner and when the car would not start. She never told anyone that phrase. Not Matteo. Not Lukas. Her father has been dead six years.
In a room above the Limmat, a man watches her through a camera hidden inside the charger block she plugged into her desk during a Q4 audit. He tells the colleague sitting two rows from her to let Livia keep digging, because the more she accesses, the more the audit trail points at her and not at them.
What she is actually walking into has a name in the bank's files, Project Zero, and everyone who says it out loud gives her a different story about what it is.
It runs from a trading floor to a railway platform, to a safe house, to a bridge at midnight, to a decommissioned military bunker by a lake where the air fills with halon gas and the trap resets in five minutes.
A financial thriller with a hostage clock, an insider who has to break her own security to save her brother, and a betrayal eighteen years in the making.
