It traces his rise from a self-described stray dog with no confidence into Mr. Clutch, the most feared closer in basketball, the only player in NBA history to win a Finals MVP award while playing for the losing team.
But this book does not stop at the box score. It follows West into the Lakers front office, where the same relentless, self-punishing standard that built a legend also nearly broke him, where he orchestrated the trade that brought both Shaquille O'Neal and a teenage Kobe Bryant to Los Angeles in a single unforgettable summer, and where he later admitted his depression was never worse than during the very seasons his teams were winning championships. It follows him into a decade-spanning second act rebuilding the Memphis Grizzlies from nothing, quietly architecting Golden State's dynasty, and fighting, late in life, to correct the record when Hollywood got his story wrong.
