Silas eventually uncovers the truth: the supernatural debt was actually a geological accident caused by a botched industrial project that released mind-altering gases. By confronting the mountain and naming his lost sister, Silas breaks the psychological hold of the wind, allowing the townspeople to reclaim their stolen pasts and finally breathe on their own.
