In 1676, London poet Thomas Vertue trades the coffee houses of England for the muddy wilds of Massachusetts Bay Colony to manage his stern cousin's household. Ill-suited for colonial life, Thomas fumbles with axes, clashes with a malevolent goat named Ezekiel, and finds himself investigated by pious village elders. But his greatest challenge comes from within the March household: a sharp-witted wife who dreams of a wider world, and her gap-toothed son who sees magic in everything. A story of unlikely belonging, told with warmth and wit.
