The Young Visiters; or, Mr. Salteena's Plan
A Child's Edwardian Comedy of Courtship, Social Climbing, and High-Society MannersBy Daisy Ashford, James Matthew Barrie
Length1h 45m
About this audiobook
The Young Visiters; or, Mr. Salteena's Plan presents a singularly comic vision of Edwardian social aspiration, romance, and class performance through deliberately unpolished prose. Its mock-formal diction, startling spelling, compressed plotting, and candid observations turn the conventions of the marriage novel and drawing-room comedy into an inventive satire. The central tale's account of Mr. Salteena's campaign for gentility remains its standout achievement, exposing the absurdities of rank while preserving an unexpectedly affectionate imaginative world. Daisy Ashford's famously youthful composition supplies the volume's distinctive voice: alert to adult rituals yet unconstrained by adult literary decorum. James Matthew Barrie's association with the work places it within a broader early-twentieth-century interest in childhood, fantasy, and the creative authority of unconventional narrators. Together, the authorial framing and the text's juvenile perspective complicate assumptions about literary polish, authenticity, and satire, allowing innocence and social critique to coexist. This volume is recommended to readers of comic fiction, children's writing, and Edwardian culture. It offers an unusually rich encounter with a voice at once naïve, sophisticated, and subversive, while inviting reflection on class, authorship, and literary value. Its compact form rewards close reading and encourages lively dialogue between youthful invention and established literary tradition.
