'The Warden' by Anthony Trollope is a story about Septimus Harding, the well-respected warden of a charitable hospital (almshouse), in the fictional English town of Barchester. His peaceful life is disrupted by a local reformer, John Bold, who questions the large income Harding receives, believing this money is taking away from what is meant to support the hospital's poor residents. A moral dilemma arises as Harding is torn between his own comfort and what is right. The book is a critique of the Church of England's practices during the 19th Century.
