Escrito en 1855 por Anthony Trollope, "El custodio" es un libro que va mas allá de la historia que nos describe y el primero de la serie Crónicas de Barchester. Plantea una serie de situaciones, donde la conciencia y el saber en todo momento que se obra con probidad, se antepone a todas las normas y subterfugios legales, que si bien se integran en un ordenamiento jurídico consagrado, no forman parte de una reflexión profunda acerca de si se actúa de una manera fidedigna a las estipulaciones de un testamento, transcrito para cubrir las necesidades de personas mayores necesitadas.
"El custodio" cuenta como el reverendo Harding, chantre de Barchester, viudo, con dos hijas y custodio de un asilo donde residen doce ancianos sin recursos, se ve envuelto en una batalla legal, por ver si los emolumentos que recibe son los que en verdad le corresponden. Al demandante, que también nos lo esboza como un hombre integro, que salvaguarda los derechos de los ciudadanos, le guía en todo momento hacer justicia de algo, que de una manera u otra repercute en el bien común y sobre todo en el futuro de los ocupantes de la residencia. Habiendo intereses personales por medio (una hija esta casada con el arcediano que es el superior del custodio, y el impulsor de la demanda, John Bold, es el prometido de la otra), poco importará que prosiga o no el pleito que inició, pues lo relevante para Harding es si su situación es honesta y se ajusta a derecho. De tal magnitud es esa pugna interna, que le hace plantearse dimitir y volver a su destino original en caso de demostrarse su mala praxis.
Anthony Trollope es uno de los grandes maestros de la edad de oro de la literatura inglesa, la que dio autores de la categoría de Jane Austen, Dickens o Thackeray.
