About this audiobook
Vaitupu is a sleepy island in the Pacific, part of the tiny country of Tuvalu.
In the days after the end of World War II, their leaders decide to buy a remote island in Fiji, sight unseen, after a meeting with the former headmaster of their school, who was passing by the island in a ship.
The British Colonial authorities in Fiji let them buy it and populate it with their own natives.
This true story documents how this came about, traces the varied career of the headmaster and one of his headstrong pupils, and looks at the challenges faced by those pioneers who went to live on the island.
How did they fare? Their descendants are thriving on the island, and play an interesting convening role in the climate change debate that dominates the politics of Tuvalu.
