The mug on the drying rack has a crack running rim to base like a river on a map. Oliver Chen stares at it for a full seven seconds before he registers the pan in the sink - grease congealed, eggshell stuck to the rim - which is the third one this week, and which belongs to a man who crashed on his couch three weeks ago and has not left.
What stops him is not the pan. It is the note folded into a neat square and propped against the salt shaker, in ballpoint capitals by somebody who learned cursive and rejected it.

Derek. Who has perfect teeth and an Instagram gym membership, who broke up with Mateo Rivera six months ago, and who has apparently been in this kitchen while Oliver was at work.
Oliver is twenty-eight, a graphic designer, and by his own account principled rather than rigid. His sister Claire texts him before eight in the morning to tell him he is rigid. Mateo plays the same four chords for forty-seven minutes at a stretch, chews guitar picks until they fray, and calls him roomie instead of his name.
They met at a house show in Bushwick. Mateo needed a room. Oliver said yes before he thought about it.
What they eventually agree to is a pact with ground rules, because Mateo googled how not to ruin a good thing at three in the morning and came back with bullet points. First rule, honesty, with nothing hidden. And two weeks of telling nobody, because they want to work out what this is before anyone else gets to weigh in.
Two weeks is a long time in a building where the walls are thin and everybody has a phone.
Someone is leaving pink notes under Oliver's door. Someone has been standing outside his building at dawn. Someone sits down at a family dinner and plays a saved voicemail out loud like a grenade pulled from a pocket. And it is not Derek.
A Brooklyn roommates-to-lovers romance between two men - closed-door, with a real fight about honesty rather than a misunderstanding, an ex who will not hand back the key, a friend who is far more dangerous than the ex, and a song called Kitchen Light that only one of them knows is about him.
