About this audiobook
The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century is a striking early work of speculative fiction, blending Gothic resurrection fantasy with political satire, futuristic romance, and utopian imagination. Set in 2126, it revives the Egyptian pharaoh Cheops into a world of technological marvels—air travel, automated machinery, and transformed social institutions—while using his outsider's perspective to interrogate monarchy, reform, gender, science, and progress. Its exuberant, episodic style places it between Mary Shelley's philosophical Gothic and the nineteenth century's emerging science fiction tradition. Mrs. Loudon, better known as Jane C. Loudon, was a versatile writer whose later fame rested on influential works of popular botany and gardening. Widowed early in intellectual ambition but not in opportunity, she wrote The Mummy! while still young, displaying a remarkable command of contemporary debates about science, politics, and literature. Her imaginative leap into the twenty-second century reflects both Romantic curiosity and a practical mind alert to invention, education, and social change. Readers interested in the origins of science fiction, women's writing, or nineteenth-century visions of the future will find this novel rewarding. Though expansive and melodramatic, it is intellectually lively, historically important, and unexpectedly modern in its fascination with technology, reform, and the consequences of awakening the past within the future.
