About this audiobook
William John Locke's *The Morals of Marcus Ordeyne* is an Edwardian novel of conscience, desire, and social judgment. Its protagonist, a cultivated bachelor and schoolmaster, finds his settled principles challenged when an emotionally vulnerable young woman enters his protected existence. The ensuing conflict between propriety and compassion gives the novel its central dramatic energy: Locke asks whether inherited codes of respectability are genuinely moral, or merely convenient forms of social control. Written in an elegant, witty, and frequently sentimental style, the book combines psychological observation with the conversational pleasures of social comedy. It belongs to the late-Victorian and early-Edwardian tradition of the "problem novel," while also anticipating the more sympathetic treatment of unconventional relationships in twentieth-century fiction. Locke (1863–1930), born in British Guiana and educated at Cambridge, worked in education before establishing himself as a prolific novelist and playwright. His professional experience among teachers and institutions informs the book's interest in authority, discipline, and the limitations of respectable public identities. Like several of Locke's popular novels, it reflects his fascination with outsiders whose emotional needs expose the inadequacy of conventional moral formulas. This is a rewarding choice for readers interested in Edwardian literary culture, ethical fiction, and the tension between social reputation and humane understanding. Its polished prose, engaging characterization, and deliberately provocative moral inquiry make it valuable both as an entertaining narrative and as a revealing document of changing attitudes toward gender, intimacy, and personal freedom.
