The procedure is for Fiona, who is in an oversized cardigan and a bright yellow beanie, drinking tea she does not really want because she knows her sister worries. Megan has been holding Fiona up since the night she was nineteen years old and signed her name four times in a hospital room, and did not bother reading the fourth page.
Bennett West is forty-seven, widowed nine years, and wants a sixty-story tower on a sliver of land his family has held since the 1920s. He is known for exacting standards, a short temper, and burning through lawyers the way most people burn through coffee filters. Six firms in seven years.
He tells her the proposal is thorough and expensive and that he does not like expensive. He sits down without inviting her to. The chair she gets is lower than his, deliberately.
She takes the account anyway.
What she does not flag, because it reads like nothing, is the line on page nineteen. *Client agrees to two monthly public appearances with counsel.*
It is boilerplate. It is visibility. It is also the exact document a partner called Eleanor Vance holds up in a meeting with the timing of somebody who knew where to look, and after that there is a leak Megan cannot trace, a client who decides she has been lying to him, and a surgery that somebody else has quietly paid for without telling her who.
This is a first-person billionaire workplace romance about a lawyer who has never been allowed to need anything from anyone, a widower who has been out of the world for nine years, and a contract that keeps meaning more than it says. The heat is closed door.
