About this audiobook
John Fox Jr.'s *The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come* (1903) is a coming-of-age novel set amid the divided loyalties of Civil War–era Kentucky. It follows Chad, an orphaned mountain boy whose movement from rural innocence into military and social experience becomes a study of regional identity, moral formation, and national conflict. Fox combines sentimental romance, historical fiction, local color, and vigorous dialect narration, rendering Appalachian landscapes and speech with both picturesque detail and cultural purpose. The novel belongs to the tradition of postbellum regional literature that sought to represent the American South while imagining reconciliation across the divisions of the Civil War; its melodramatic conventions are balanced by an attentive interest in class, belonging, and the transformation of a youthful consciousness. A native of Kentucky, John Fox Jr. drew extensively on the landscapes, traditions, and speech of the Cumberland region. His experiences as a journalist, war correspondent, and popular novelist helped shape his interest in dramatic historical settings and in communities negotiating the pressures of modern American nationhood. Fox's familiarity with Appalachia lends the novel its vivid sense of place, while his engagement with the era's romantic and nationalist ideals informs its emphasis on courage, loyalty, and social reintegration. This book is recommended to readers interested in Civil War fiction, Appalachian cultural history, and the development of American regionalism. Its accessible narrative and memorable protagonist make it inviting, while its treatment of identity, sectional memory, and cultural representation rewards sustained scholarly attention.
