Cal Byrne wins the draw clean. The puck comes back to him on a feed so precise it feels threaded through traffic by instinct, the goalie is sliding the wrong way, and the net is open five-hole. The kind of chance you do not miss if you want to stay in the lineup.
He misses.
Because he is thinking about Declan O'Rourke's hands. The way he adjusts his grip on the shaft. The way the tape is wound tight around the butt end, the same way Cal winds his own.
Declan got assigned down three weeks ago and Cal still cannot work out how a fourth-line grinder skates like water. He has a missing tooth, top left, a puck to the face in juniors that gives him a kid's grin on a man's body, and a habit of touching the gap with his tongue when he is thinking. Cal has catalogued all of it, which is a problem he does not have language for.
Rafe Delgado, for his part, will not look at him, drifts out of his lane, and puts his phone away fast whenever Cal walks past.
Then a blog post goes up: no names, no proof, just *sources close to the team say* and *one player told this reporter*, and a paragraph about Byrne complaining privately over line rotations. The general manager calls the league office. There is an investigation. Coach Pete tells him to keep his head down and his mouth shut.
Across town, Cal's sister Maeve is in a hospital bed working a thousand-piece puzzle that is nothing but sky, waiting on antibody results, while a doctor explains that the list is long in this state and a living donor would be the better option.
Declan keeps turning up. He brings popcorn in a plastic grocery bag and a worn DVD. He puts his mother's phone number on a folded piece of paper into Maeve's hand. He stops Cal in an empty corridor and says, *I'm not going to push. But I want you to know - if you change your mind. About the leak. About anything. I'm here.*
Cal has never once said his brother's name out loud. Patrick died when Cal was sixteen.
What comes after that is a kiss in the dark, a morning of secrets, and the thing Cal is actually afraid of, which is not the leak and not Rafe but a rink town, a locker room, and a career he has spent his whole life being careful with.
An MM hockey romance about linemates, loyalty and a sister who needs more than a brother can give on his own. The romance is closed-door.
