Summary
Young Adebanjo is torn between the home, where everything is comfortable and safe, and the railway, which is unsettling and calling in a small town in Nigeria, where the soil and tradition bind him. He gets to know the language of engines at the station under the supervision of Ojo and gets to know the sweet companionship of Abike, the orange-seller, whose laughter takes the edge off the change. But as men are drawn on parades and word of insurrection goes round, the whistle of the Lagos train is no longer a sound, but an option. The Last Station is an intensely human narrative of love, loss, and the desire to get more, where each move comes with promise and loss.
